ADA AWARENESS & ACCESSIBILITY COMMITTEE
Minutes of Wednesday, April 25, 2001
The ADA Awareness & Accessibility Committee met on Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at 11:15 a.m. in the Combs Building, Room 430. The following individuals attended:

  Ms. Virginia Underwood  
The meeting was brought to order by Dr. Naugle. Motion was made to approve the minutes by Dr. Dilka; second by Dr. Kautzmann, all were in favor.

Old Business

  • Parking Status and Projects (Mark Jozefowicz)

    -University Drive will be done between intersession and summer sessions.

    -There will be more parking in front of the Library on the left hand side.

    -Possible parking spots will be put in between McGregor Hall and the Combs Classroom Building. Mr. Herzog will put it in writing and present it to Mr. James Street.

    -Dr. Mercer asked about the spots in the Martin Hall/Combs Lot on either side of the hydrant spot becoming handicapped spaces. Mr. Jozefowicz said that this could be done and wouldn't be a problem.

  • Recognition of Service (Dr. Naugle)

    -Retirement of Dr. Lisette Kautzmann. A certificate of appreciation and service was given to Dr. Kautzmann from the Committee.

    -Graduation for Mr. Seth Rosenblatt. Mr. Rosenblatt will be continuing his education at Texas Tech in their Doctoral Program.

  • Report on the April 18th Awareness Day (Dr. Dilka, Mr. Herzog and Ms. Bellusicio)

    -Good participation from all the participating groups.

    -Need ways of drawing the attention of the people on campus to attend.

    -Ms. Belluscio struck up interaction with students passing through.

    -Ideas for next year:

    ~ Moulage: Putting people into temporary disabilities and sending them out into the public for several hours. After returning, having the participants discuss their experiences in a forum with an audience.

    ~ Disabilities Narrative: Subject would be someone who lives with someone else that has a disability.

    ~Inviting Famous Individuals to Campus: Chris[Top]her Reeve, Ben Vareen, Former Miss America - Heather Whitestone, John Hockenberry and Marly Maitlin.
    ~ Possible Sponsors for such event could be:
    -ADA Awareness & Accessibility Committee;
    -Centerboard; and
    -Other off campus sponsors
    Ms. Clark will check the Internet for any information regarding the above individuals.

    ~ Getting more students involved. Possibly putting information about the Committee in the Residential Halls.

    ~ Inviting Ms. Kenna Middleton to be apart of the committee.

New Business
  • Awareness sub-committees report (just any pending date, etc.)

    1. "Month" (July) (Dr. Dilka and Mr. Herzog)

      -Discussion in New Business.

    2. "Year" (Dr. Loy and Dr. Kautzmann)

      -Discussion in New Business.

  • Committee member's issues?

    1. "Tentative" Schedule for future meetings

      -Fall Meetings (Tentative Schedule)
      ~ Every thirds (3rd) Wednesday of the month @ 11"15 - 12:15

      Tasks for summer and fall

      -Dr. Naugle is going to construct a letter to send out at the beginning of fall semester for getting representatives from the student body.

      -Possible banners promoting Awareness Month on University Drive as well as around campus.

      -Mr. Herzog volunteered to work on the banners.

      -Mr. Herzog is going to talk with Dr. Lee Van Orsdel in regards of having a display in the Library entrance that features Awareness for the month of July.

      -Ms. Belluscio said that a warning alarm system is being placed on campus. The company that is putting the system in is working with Mr. Larry Westbrook.

      Other Comments

      -Dr. Loy let the committee know that he is on the committee for a new signature building. The county, city, and university are in joint support for this building. This building will be located somewhere on the Eastern by-pass. He will keep the committee informed.

      -Ms. Clark mentioned to the committee that a student approached her regarding the lighting in between the Wallace Building and the Case Annex Building, that the alleyway is too dark.

      -Ms. Coyer agreed and mentioned that the lighting on the outside of Wallace Building for the stairway is dark too.

      -Mr. Herzog said he would talk with someone regarding this situation.

      -Mr. Rosenblatt thanked the Committee, Ms. Belluscio and Dr. Naugle for allowing him to be apart of this committee.
Motion was made to adjourn by Dr. Loy; second by Mr. Rosenblatt, all were in favor.
