ADA AWARENESS & ACCESSIBILITY COMMITTEE
Minutes of Wednesday, March 21, 2001
The ADA Awareness & Accessibility Committee met on Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at 11:15 a.m. in the Combs Building, Room 430. The following individuals attended:
Present: Ms. Kerri Clark Ms. Nina Coyer

  Mr. Ed Herzog Dr. Lisette Kautzmann
  Dr. Dorothy Mercer Dr. Kim Naugle
  Mr. Seth Rosenblatt  
The meeting was brought to order by Dr. Naugle. The first order of business was the review of the minutes. Motion was made to approve the minutes by Dr. Hayes; second by Dr. Kautzmann, all were in favor.

Old Business

  • Parking Status and Projects (Dr. Naugle, Mr. Herzog and Dr. Mercer)

    1. Parking on University Drive (Mr. Jozefowicz)

      -University Drive is on the next roster for the next available paint time.

    2. Parking survey in progress (Dr. Mercer)

      -Nothing to add at this time.

  • Disability accommodations statement for financial aid advising (Ms. Belluscio and Dr. Mercer)

    1. Report on any follow up from Mr. Fish or Ms. Spivey

      -Dr. Mercer called Mr. Fish and was able to talk with him on the phone.

      -Mr. Fish was under the assumption that things had been taken care of since he had received a thank you letter.

      -Mr. Fish is going to try to get the disabilities statement and information put into the booklets before it goes to printing as well as placement on the website.

      -Dr. Naugle mentioned that if Mr. Fish was unable to get the disability information included in the booklet, possibly having that information put in as an insert.

  • Request from Teaching and Learning center for help in making center more accessible (Dr. Naugle and Mr. Herzog)

    1. Temporary Signage/Floor marking of route to elevator

      -Signage and painting have been completed.

  • ADA and the Supreme Court decision debate moved to March 6th at 7:30 p.m. in Wallace (Dr. Lisette Kautzmann)

    -Dr. Kautzmann passed out flyers for everyone to make copies of and pass out and hang up.

    -The debate will be videotaped.

    -Mr. Rosenblatt will be talking with The Progress to have the debate advertised.

    -Ms. Coyer asked that the lighting in the Adams Room be turned up so it's not so dark.

    -Ms. Coyer also asked about the positioning of the interpreter during the debate. Dr. Kautzmann said that the interpreter would be positioned next to the debater.

    -Dr. Naugle is going to email a thank you to Bob Miller and the debaters after the debate on March 27th.

  • Support letter for Psychological Disabilities On Campus Teleconference (Dr. Naugle)

    -Dr. Naugle sent an email for the support of the teleconference to Dr. Dee Cockrille, Dr. Doug Whitlock, and Mr. Harry Moberly. The email was attached to the agenda.

    -Ms. Clark mentioned that the teleconference has been accepted. The teleconference is April 2, 2001, at 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. in the Library, Room 108.

    -Ms. Clark will talk with Ms. Underwood in regards of having one of the closed captioning televisions available.

New Business
  • Awareness sub-committees report (just any pending date, etc.)

    1. "Day" (Dr. Dilka and Mr. Herzog)

      -Dr. Kustra has agreed to interview Mr. Tim Farmer, host of Kentucky Afield on his radio show, Horizons.

      -Mr. Herzog is hoping that this can take place the Friday before Awareness Day to boost the cause.

      -Ideas for possible booths:

      ~ Child & Family Clinic
      ~ Dr. DeBauge-Harcum w/student regarding ergonomics
      ~ Equal Opportunity Office
      ~ ADA Awareness & Accessibility Committee
      -Mr. Herzog and Dr. Dilka mentioned they are going to ask Dr. Kustra to address Administrative Council again regarding the wearing of the Awareness Buttons.

      -Motion was made for Mr. Herzog to buy 2600 buttons for Awareness Day by Dr. Dilka; second by Ms. Clark, all were in favor.

      -A letter will be sent out as well as a button to each staff and faculty member of the University Community.

    2. "Month" (July) (Dr. Dilka and Mr. Herzog)

      -Nothing at this time.

    3. "Year" (Dr. Loy and Dr. Kautzmann)

      -Nothing at this time.


  • Committee member's issues?

    Teleconference Workshop

    -Mr. Herzog mentioned having a quarterly newsletter with tips regarding the ADA. An example of one newsletter would be positioning of an interpreter at a debate or presentation.
Motion was made to adjourn by Dr. Naugle; second by Ms. Clark, all were in favor.
