The ADA Awareness & Accessibility Committee met on Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at 11:15 a.m. in the Combs Building, Room 415. The following individuals were in attendance:
Present: Ms. Teresa Belluscio Ms. Kerri Clark
  Mr. Ed Herzog Mr. Mark Jozefowicz
  Dr. Kim Naugle  
The meeting was brought to order by Dr. Naugle.

Old Business

  • Recap of Diversity/ADA Awareness Day

    - There were some concerns with the mixture and the focus of the day.

    - Overall it was a good experience.

    - Committee came to a consensus that we would take part in Diversity Day but will not be a co-sponsor for next year.

  • Parking Status and Projects (Mark Jozefowicz)

    1. Addition of spaces on University Drive-etc. (Mark Jozefowicz)
      - Mr. Jozefowicz said that there would be five additional handicap parking spaces painted on University Drive.

      - One space will be painted in the Weaver/Combs Parking lot next to the fire hydrant space.

    2. Report on parking courtesy ticket (Dr. Callahan)

      - Item has been tabled till next meeting.

  • Status of and decision on establishing committee to gather information and draft document on building and remodeling recommendations from the committee (Dr. Naugle)

    - Item has been tabled till next meeting.

  • DATA for Newsletter (Kerri Clark)

    - Item has been tabled till next meeting.

New Business
  • Discussion of Diversity Awareness events scheduled for the coming year.

    1. Co-Sponsor vs. be an exhibitor for the Diversity Day event in April

      - The committee decided to just be apart of the Diversity Day next April.

    2. Possible for ADA Awareness Day, Month, and beyond (Drs. Dilka and Loy and Mr. Herzog)(Fall date suggested??)

      - The committee decided to celebrate awareness in October. October is the official month for ADA Awareness.

      - Mr. Jozefowicz mentioned having the movie "Sam I Am" starring Sean Penn be shown sometime during the month. He will be contacting Ms. Natalie Webb in Student Development on arranging this event.

      - Mr. Herzog will be contacting Mr. Ron Harrell in regards of media representation.

      - The idea was also presented to have the ADA Awareness Day and its activities announced at the football games this fall.

      - Ms. Clark will talk with Ms. Lee Van Orsdel for a book exhibit on disabilities in the Grand Reading Room of the Library.

  • Member brought issues

    1. Parking Operation Office

      - Accessibility issues were discussed regarding the new Parking Operations Office. The office is being moved to one of the Brockton Apartment Buildings. As of now the building is not accessible.

      - Services for now for Individuals with Disabilities will be provided in the Brewer Building.

      - Recommendations for the new office:

      1. New Signage
      2. Signage for Handicap Services in Brewer Building next to the curb
      3. Making sure that the Brewer Building parking lot has wheelchair access to the sidewalk

      - Mr. Jozefowicz and Mr. Herzog will follow up on the modifications for the above items.

    2. Parking Issues with the New Student Services Building

      - There will be 96 parking spaces for the Student Services Building. Included in those spaces was going to be four handicap spaces. After a discussion between Mr. James Street and Ms. Belluscio there will be six handicap spaces.

      - Mr. Jozefowicz feels that there could be more. He would rather us have too many than not enough.

      - Discussion on some signage for specific and temporary handicap spaces for employees, visitors and students for the lot.

      - This parking lot will serve for the Alumni Coliseum as well as for the Student Services Building.

      - Mr. Herzog and Ms. Belluscio will talk with Mr. Street regarding expansion of the six spots to more, as well as the spots off of Park Drive into the front of the building.

    3. Art Exhibit with Committee Sponsorship

      - Ms. Belluscio has been in contact with Ms. Esther Randall of the Art Department. The exhibit will be in the Giles Gallery of the Campbell Building.

      - The exhibit will be from Monday, September 30 - Saturday, October 26, 2002.

      - The committee has been asked to provide an honorarium of $300.00. There will be a contract drawn up. Ms. Belluscio will draw up the contract.

      - It is customary for a reception. The committee needs to set a date for the reception next meeting.

      - An idea was passed around the table that we have Awareness Day the same day as the reception.

      - Mr. Herzog will be contacting Mr. Dave Freeland with the Aramark Company regarding some refreshments for the reception.

      - Dr. Naugle will be contacting Dr. Rita Davis and Dr. Mark Wasicsko for possible contributions for the honorarium.

    4. The Disabilities Office in New Location

      - The Disabilities Office will be moving August 6, 2002, to the Student Services Building. They will be located on the third floor.

  • Future Meeting Dates

    - August 28
    - September 11
    - October 16
    - November 13
Motion was made to adjourn; all were in favor.
