| The ADA Awareness & Accessibility Committee met on Wednesday, October 16, 2002, at 11:15 a.m. in the Combs Building, Room 415. The following individuals were in attendance: |

| The meeting was brought to order by Dr. Naugle. The first order of business was the review of the minutes. Motion was made to accept the minutes by Dr. Loy, second by Ms. Kalscheur; all were in favor. |

Old Business
- Review of ADA Awareness Day Activities
- Powell Bldg. Activities (Ms. Belluscio, Dr. Dilka, and Mr. Herzog)
- This year's day seemed to have more student involvement.
- The committee mentioned that there was good banner promotion. Kudos to Mr. Herzog.
- There was one individual that express some concerns regarding not being listed in publications as being a part of this month's awareness.
- Overall there has been positive feedback.
- Discussion of sending thank you cards to the participants; Ms. Clark volunteered to send out thank you cards to all participants.
- Mr. Herzog mentioned having next year's Awareness Day under the overhang next to the bookstore.
- Mr. Herzog and Ms. Clark discussed at Awareness Day of having a table designed for the committee that could be at any event. Ms. Clark will be working on a design for the tablecloth and backdrop.
- Review of Art Exhibit Reception (Dr. Naugle)
- Around 75 individuals attended the art exhibit reception between 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. At 6:00 p.m. there was 12 to 13 people there for President Glasser's official proclamation.
- The proclamation will be permanently displayed in the Office of Services for Individuals with Disabilities.
- President Glasser seemed very positive about the event.
- Review of Web Accessibility Teleconference on Oct. 9 (Ms. Clark)
- The symposium had some good speakers as well as some informative materials, which included checklists, information regarding Section 508 and a Q&A with the online learning software companies and the speakers of the day.
- The ADA coordinators of the state will be getting together to discuss more about compiling some goals/guidelines for the colleges and universities to follow in making their web presence more accessibility now and in the future.
- During the lunch/work session, the EKU group formed a committee to discuss accessibility for the web along with this, possibilities of doing grant proposals for the cause.
- The Online Accessibility Committee will meet Wednesday, October 23, 2002 at 12:00 p.m. in the Office of Services for Individuals with Disabilities.
- Newsletter status (Ms. Clark)
- Ms. Clark wants to thank everyone that helped get the first newsletter up and going, especially Ms. Belluscio.
- The newsletter is going to be a semester project as of right now. Content is needed for next semester's newsletter. Please be thinking of content we can include.
- Discussion of plan to go forward on Building and Remodeling recommendations (Dr. Loy and R. Naugle)
- Recommendations need to be addressed.
- Dr. Naugle presented the first recommendation; this recommendation was to have any new construction project to have at least one member or representative from the committee.
- One suggestion was to have Mr. Herzog be involved. Mr. Herzog mentioned that most of the time he is involved towards the end of the project.
- Dr. Loy mentioned that he had talked with the College of Business & Technology Building architect and asked for him to attend one of our committee meetings.
- Mr. Herzog suggested that the committee ask the building project committee to have the architect(s) come present to the ADA Committee and the ADA Committee provide suggestions to help with accessibility issues.
- Dr. Naugle suggested that the committee talk with their individual departments regarding any recommendations about areas or buildings that they feel need to be addressed. Once these recommendations have been heard submit them to Dr. Loy or to himself.
Additional Accessibility Issues
- Dr. Rita Davis e-mailed Dr. Naugle referring to the new upcoming wellness center. Dr. Davis needed some suggestions for equipment for individuals with disabilities. Dr. Naugle suggested for her talk with the Department of Occupational Therapy as well as he providing some suggestions.
- Dr. Hayes mentioned that recommendations for any type of accessibility, needs to be addressed. He mentioned that online forms (example: conference registration) need some kind of information asking if this person or persons need accommodations.
- Dr. Hayes would like EKU to become more accessible with its accommodations. Along with these accommodations compensation needs to taken into consideration. This includes public forums as well as campus activities.
- The Committee suggested that adoption of a general statement be addressed for these accommodations. There are three steps in making this project successful, they include:
- Identifying a Central Office of Contact for the Accommodations
- General Accommodations Statement
- Funding of these Accommodations
- Motion was made by Dr. Dilka, second by Dr. Loy that Dr. Hayes draft a brief proposal, develop a statement to be attached to all forms of registration, publications, or specific publicity advertisement electronic and/or paper; discussion and identify a central office; and include involvement with the Office of Services for Individuals with Disabilities as well as involving Ms. Shirley Rivard, Interpreting Services to bring back to the committee for review; all were in favor. |

New Business
- Discussion of continuing ADA Awareness Month events scheduled.
- Movie on University cable station {Sam I AM, ??} (Dr. Dilka)
- Dr. Dilka mentioned that "I AM Sam" is not available.
- Dr. Dilka did receive a list from Mr. Jey Marks regarding what was available. Dr. Dilka will e-mail this list to Ms. Clark. Ms. Clark will e-mail the whole committee to vote on a movie for viewing.
- ADA activities and information announced at football game (??)
- Will not be announced this year.
- Library activities for month (Ms. Clark)
- The book exhibit is going well. The library staff that worked on the exhibit asked for more books - patrons were checking out the books left and right. So our cause is getting out there!
- Art exhit set for Monday, September 30th through Saturday, October 26th (Ms. Belluscio)
- The exhibit is still happening. Everything seems to be going well.
- Deaf Virtual University (Shirley Rivard)
- The Deaf Virtual University will be Friday, October 25, 2002 at 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the Powell Building provided by the Deaf Student Services.

- Offices for Students with Disabilities Open House on the 31st
- Office of Services for Individuals with Disabilities will provide snacks and office tours between 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 31, 2002. For more information contact Teresa Belluscio.
- Member brought issues
- Dr. Ed Richard came to the meeting for advice, different views and interests regarding an assistive technology lab. Dr. Richard is preparing a grant for this cause.
- One concern mentioned regarding this lab was its location. A couple of locations that were discussed included the Library and the Wallace Building.
- Several committee members mentioned that they would talk with their departments regarding Dr. Richard's request and would let him know as soon as possible.
