Subject: University Wide Interpreting Services

In our ongoing efforts to provide quality interpreting services and access for EKU deaf employees and students to academic as well as all university employee services, events and professional activities, Dr. Kathryn Polmanteer, Dean Mark Wasicsko, Mr. Harry Moberly and I have met several times over the course of the past several months to discuss options, resources and approaches. We realize that there are gaps in interpreting services when looking beyond students and the immediate areas of the Special Education and the College of Education. Under Mr. Moberly’s office, Mrs. Shirley Rivard’s salary and services are funded by Vocational Rehabilitation to provide interpreting services for students only. The ITP staff interpreter Mrs. Gay Woloschek is also funded by Vocational Rehabilitation and she is able to provide interpreting services within the Special Education Department and to a limited degree the College of Education for deaf EKU faculty and staff. A budge has recently been established by Mr. Ken Johnston to provide funds to pay for interpreting services that Mrs. Rivard and Mrs. Woloschek are not able to provide or pay for. This account has given relief to both offices but has not addressed the larger issue of coordination and delivery of services. Recognizing the ADA Committee’s goal of helping to ensure the university is fully accessible to students, employees and the greater community we are making the following recommendation to the ADA committee and asking that the committee forward our recommendation along with their support to the Provost and President. We recommend a new full time position be established as quickly as possible under Mr. Moberly’s office to coordinate, facilitate and monitor interpreting services for deaf employees and the greater community to all aspects of university wide services, events and professional activities. This position does not have to be a qualified interpreter, but must be someone comfortable with Sign Language and knowledgeable of the array of services to disabled individuals provided through Mr. Moberly’s office. This position will not only coordinate interpreting services in collaboration with Mrs. Rivard and Mrs. Woloschek but will assist other professionals within Mr. Moberly’s office in the direct coordination and provision of services for disabled individuals.

We appreciate the committee’s immediate consideration of our recommendation. Please feel free to contact any of us for further detail and information regarding this recommendation and request.
