The ADA Awareness & Accessibility Committee met on Wednesday, September 10, 2003, at 11:15 a.m. in the Student Services Building, Disabilities Office in Room 364. The following individuals were in attendance:

Review of Minutes

The meeting was brought to order by Dr. Naugle. Review of the minutes from July 09, 2003, meeting; motion was made to accept the minutes by Dr. Hayes, second by Dr. Loy; all were in favor.

Old Business

  • Draft copy of the statement to take forward regarding accessibility requests for campus events (Dr. Hayes and Ms. Rivard)

  • Discussion and revisions of the accessibility statement took place.

    Point to ponder when review and revising the statement:

    1. This statement needs to be able to:
      1. Notify people coming to events on campus, and
      2. Someone to contact.
    2. Who to contact? Possibilities include:
      1. Disabilities Office [Mr. Harry Moberly]
      2. College of Education [Dr. Mark Wasicsko]
      3. Extended Programs, Continuing Education & Outreach [Mr. Byron Bond]
      4. Development [Mr. Marc Whitt]
      5. Provost & Vice President of Academic Affairs [Dr. Lyle Cook]
    3. What these accommodations would include:
      1. Providing sign language
      2. Ramp accessibility
    4. Communications throughout is needed
    5. Cooperation of the Facilities Policy

    Accessibility Statement (Revision: 2003 September 10)

    Eastern Kentucky University, in accordance with all state and federal regulations including section 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, provides equal access and opportunity for all students, faculty, staff and the community at large. In addition, EKU requires all entities using EKU facilities for public events to also follow EKU policies regarding accessibility. EKU will, with appropriate notice, attempt to provide reasonable accommodations to all individuals with special needs wishing to access events and services on campus. For more information or to make accommodation requests, contact _______________________.

    Dr. Naugle and Dr. Hayes will plan to work on a “justification statement” to accompany the accessibility statement that explains why the committee is requesting that this above statement be included in any publication of any University event. This statement will be brought to the committee for review next meeting.

    All other Old Business items were tabled till the next meeting. Motion was made by Dr. Loy, second by Dr. Walker and Dr. Hayes; all were in favor.

New Business
  • Election of officers and plan for meetings for 2004

    1. Chair

      Dr. Naugle stepped down as Committee chair. Dr. Marlene Huff was nominated for the position. Dr. Huff accepted nomination. Motion was made for Dr. Huff to chair the Committee by Mr. Herzog, second by Dr. Naugle; all were in favor.

    2. Secretary

      Ms. Kerri Clark was nominated for the position of secretary. Ms. Clark accepted nomination, motion was made by Mr. Herzog, second by Dr. Naugle; all were in favor.

    3. Location

      Motion was made to have the meeting location be the Disabilities Office, Conference Room 364 in the Students Services Building by Dr. Hayes, second by Dr. Walker; all were in favor.

    4. Time

      Motion was made to have the time remain the same, every second Wednesday of the month at 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. by Dr. Hayes, second by Dr. Walker; all were in favor.

Motion was made to adjourn; all were in favor.
