Old Business
- Update on Letter to the President for Accessibility Coordinator Position
Dr. Huff reported that President Glasser supports the letter she received from the Committee. It is timely to consider this position as strategic planning initiatives are occurring. Dr. Huff will ask Dr. Hayes to bring together a group of people to respond to the President. The ADA Committee needs to continue to monitor the discussion regarding an Accessibility Coordinator Position and respond accordingly.
- Update on Accessibility Master List
Dr. Huff, Ms. Clark, Ms. Belluscio, and Mr. Herzog met over the summer, reviewed the checklist instrument, and made some revisions. They feel they have a good working document. It now needs to be piloted in an actual evaluation of a building, and Dr. Huff and Ms. Clark had planned to do this.
The purpose of the task was reconfirmed. The primary purpose is to provide people with information. At this time, the short term objective is to create basic descriptions of accessibility that can be shared online with the public. The long term objective is to have maps of the buildings that include all the accessibility information about a building, as well as the outside accessible routes, walkways, and parking. This is a project in process.
There were several suggestions: 1) The ADA Committee walk through a building with the checklist so members could assist in gathering building information in a consistent manner. 2) Keep the checklist basic, at this time, to prevent the final document from getting too “busy.” 3) Ms. Clark has indicated that she can put the initial information online in a descriptive form.
- Signage
The issue of signage about bike parking on access ramps was discussed. Dr. Huff met with Mark Welker, Chief of Police, and Mark Jozefowicz to discuss the concerns. The current regulations state that bike locks can be cut and bikes impounded when they are parked on the ramps. It was recommended that when people see a bike on an access ramp, Public Safety should be called to come and remove the bike. Public Safety needs to document these occurrences. Mr. Herzog reported that some bike racks are being made, and he will work to put a sign on the access ramp to Crabbe Library that says, “bike parking prohibited.”
- Moore Building Ramp
Dr. Mercer reported a tree limb overhanging the ramp to the Moore building. Mr. Herzog will contact David Williams to see about getting the limb pruned.
- Parking Consultants
Dr. Huff met with the parking consultant who has been on campus to present the Committee’s comments about handicapped parking. Ms. Belluscio also participated in one of the consultant’s information gathering forums. Both felt that their concerns had been heard.

New Business
- ADA Awareness Month
Dr. Huff had the new proclamation for Disability Awareness from President Glasser. It is kept in the Individuals with Disabilities Office.
Ms. Belluscio thanked Ms. McCurdy and Ms. Kyer for their work coordinating the month’s activities. Ms. McCurdy and Ms. Kyer went over the activities: disabilities book display at Crabbe Library; Education Access Symposium; ADA Campus Awareness Day with 13 booths expected; speaker on employability and disability issues; web access training; art exhibit; trail of technology; Deaf University; and video re-broadcast of “Untangling the Web.” Mr. Herzog is trying to schedule Tim Farmer of Kentucky Afield to come as a speaker.
Dr. Huff spoke about an executive from Motorola she met at a conference, who might be a possible speaker for next year’s ADA Awareness Month.
